For the collective, artistic research and touring exhibition “In Stranger Lands: Cocoa’s Journeys to Asia,” jiandyin’s work, a fiction documentary, depicts 3 landscapes of the deep south of Thailand: the landscape of Collective memory, landscape of conflict and landscape of injustice through a research and case study of a cocoa farmer who escaped and resettled his life.
Space and Time: Establishing the History of Narrative is a fiction documentary reflects the deep south situation in Thailand through a research on a cocoa farm in upper south where a farmer fled from Pattani province (Patani as in archive) and left everything behind to begin his new life outside his homeland. By using LIDAR technology, news footages and 3D motion images, the work illustrates the geological layers and the geopolitical connectedness of space and time, every piercing point on the Lidar sensored cocoa farm referred to the latitude and longitude position of past occurred violent incidents in the deep south provinces. The interwoven of narratives hidden in space and time — a place where different things “move and split from one another” — is a history of narratives in this specific region that grows out of cracks and collisions of past, present, and future, ready to transform into something unpredictable.
